In response to the 15 March request for info about AUGUSTA's whereabouts in 1938, I can offer the following:
The chronological history that Steve referenced about AUGUSTA's cruise to Shanghai is correct as stated. AUGUSTA visited the Java Sea only twice during her 8 years on the Asiatic Station, first in 1934, then again in 1936. She was not there in '38.
In his query, I noted that Steve placed AUGUSTA's sailing date for Shanghai as 10 Oct 1938. However,cancels on mail from the ship which I have in my possession place her still at Chinwangtao on 11 Oct 38. By 14 Oct 38, the ship was indeed in Shanghai.
It's difficult to tell exactly which year Steve's mail dates from. Amazingly, AUGUSTA was in Batavia and Bali during the first week of December in both 1934 and 1936! And after each of those port calls she departed for Makassar! Unfortunately, I can't match Steve's cancels to those in my own collection. Mine are more location specific. However, it's entirely possible that he has several which I do not, and I'd very much like to see photocopies of them. (Steve, are you still out there?)
I've been collecting mail posted aboard AUGUSTA for almost 10 years now, concentrating on the years 1931-41. I have nearly 500 different cancels documented at present. Occasionally, there are instances when the ship's location information differs from that which is provided in widely accepted sources, such as The Dictionary of American Fighting Ships, and in such cases I always accept the mail from the ship as being correct. I've found that the mail clerks aboard AUGUSTA were very diligent in performing their duties insofar as changing the slugs in their cancel devices in both a timely and accurate manner, and it only makes sense to believe the men who were actually there as opposed to an author casually sifting through dates in the ship's log years after the fact.
Regarding Steve's desire for more information about CANOPUS (the correct spelling, by the way), I suggest he reference the above source, printed by the US Gov't Printing Office. Larger libraries have these volumes on their shelves, and they are a great starting point for basic information about any ship in the US Navy from its inception up until the publication date.
If anyone has an interest in mail posted aboard AUGUSTA, I'd very much like to hear from you. I'll gladly reimburse money for photocopies of any and all envelopes mailed from the ship to help me in my documentation of the postal operations aboard ship.
