Before my father passed away in 1993, he mentioned several episodes of WWII serving on the Augusta. One was the experience in meeting George Patton on deck while he was performing repairs. According to my father's memory, it was not the custom to salute an officer while you were performing necessary repairs. As George Patton walked by and failed to receive a salute from my father and his partner, Patton became upset and demanded a salute.
