I am looking for information concerning subject person, my Uncle Speed. I have a letter he wrote my father about the sinking of the USS Panay, where he helped the wounded men ashore, and details where he was hit 6 times by shrapnel. This letter is headed by: USS Augusta, Manila PI, January 9 1938. All I know is that the Panay was shot out from under him, he was trans- ferred to the USS Augusta, and later I think he was on the USS Mindanao. We have heard over the years that he was in a Japanese prison camp for a length of time, but have never been able to verify it. If anyone would like a copy of the letter, I will be glad to scan and email it. Any information or leads in tracking down his travels from one ship to another would be appreciated. I have found the "Crew of the Gunboat Panay" article and would like to have a crew list of the USS Augusta and USS Mindanao. My Uncle died of a heart attack on May 19, 1980 in Long Beach, CA.
Thanks, Buddy Adams
