Susan: In case you haven't found out yet, there were two Mindanao's - the gunboat was, I assume the one Adams may have served on. Your father - and mine - served aboard USS Mindanao (ARG-3), which was an internal combustion engine repair ship. For photos of the Mindanao, after the Mt.Hood explosion, go to the Navy site: http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-usn/usnsh-m/arg3.htm There is also a wonderful site at: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/3535/mthood.html describing the incident from several viewpoints. If your father, like mine, didn't talk much about his experiences, a lot of this will hit you hard (as it did me!). Feel free to write to me at: marysonier@yahoo.com By the way, the geocities page (which is part of the USS Rainier page) plays the Navy hymn, so make sure you have your speakers on (and maybe some tissues nearby - I find it very moving, even if it's a "canned" version). Best of luck in your search for info. Oh, one other thing. When I did a search a little while back, I did find that there was a veteran who had served on the Mindanao (ours) and was involved in reunions. I did not have an opportunity to contact him (we have been caring for my mother-in-law), but let me give you the info. Just remember that - how can I say this delicately? - he may have passed on since the information I got off the internet was posted. Oh shoot - famous last words! I can't find the info on this computer! I do have a hard copy elsewhere that I'll look up for you and post here, if I don't hear from you directly. I have to get in touch with him anyway - thought he might be interested in copies of some stuff I have from the Mindanao - nothing to help you, but there are menus for special dinners they had. I'm wondering if my father did the cover artwork - it's his style, and I'm not sure why else he would have kept this particular stuff. Good luck! Mary
