Hobart defeats Franklin & Marshall 28-20
GENEVA, NY - Hobart College receiver Dan Suozzi pulled in 12 catches for 239 yards and three touchdowns as the Statesmen used a 28-0 lead entering the fourth quarter to hold off a Franklin & Marshall College comeback for a 28-20 victory.
For the Diplomats, quarterback Doug Hiltner (Sr., Margate, NJ/Atlantic City) was the story of the final quarter as he threw for touchdowns of 15, five and one yard in the final 12 minutes of the fourth quarter as Franklin & Marshall closed to within eight points with 2:10 to go, but couldn't overcome Hobart's lead.
Trailing by 28-points entering the fourth quarter, Franklin & Marshall broke the scoring column as tailback Scott Stephen (Jr., Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) beat his defender and reeled in a 15-yard strike from Hiltner with 11:36 left on the clock for a 28-6 game. Dan Eggertssons's (Jr., Royal Palm, FL/Suncoast) extra point attempt was blocked by Hobart's Nolan Robinson.
Less than four minutes later, All-America receiver Justin Salton (Sr., Gillette, NJ/Watchung Hills) pulled down a five-yard pass from Hiltner to close to within 15 as Eggertsson's extra point attempt split the uprights.
With two minutes left in the game, Hiltner connected with Joe McGuigan (Fr., Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) on a one-yard TD pass for the 28-20 final.
The key to the game for Hobart was the pass offense as quarterback Craig Swanson connected on 20-of-34 attempts for 324 yards and three touchdowns while dealing with four Franklin & Marshall College sacks.
Leading 7-0 following a three yard touchdown run by tailback Ty Godinho with 13:56 left in the second quarter, the Statesmen built a 14-0 lead as Swanson connected with Suozzi on a 50-yard touchdown pass with 1:59 left in the first half.
In the third quarter, Swanson and Suozzi connected twice as duo combined on TD completions of two and 44 yards with 4:48 and 3:08 left in the quarter to build a large enough lead to hold off F&M's comeback attempt and seal the win.
For Franklin & Marshall, Salton led the Diplomats offense with eight receptions for 65 yards to raise his career reception total to 2782 yards on 206 receptions, as he became just the second receiver in Centennial Conference history to pull in 200 catches.
Historically, he is 28 receptions shy of surpassing Dale Amos '90 (233) for first place on the Centennial Conference and Franklin & Marshall College career receptions list.
In addition to Salton, wideout Matt Wagaman (Sr., Lititz, PA/Warwick) led the team in receiving yards with 78 on seven catches to anchor a Diplomats' pass attack which caught 27 passes for 239 yards.
Historically, Salton and Wagaman increased their hold on the all-time record for most catches by a pair of receivers in the Centennial Conference as the duo now has 329 receptions for 4,434 yards.
On the ground, Stephen carried 14-times for 73 yards as Franklin & Marshall accumulated 112 rushing yards.
On defense, linebacker Dan Nadler (Sr., Scarsdale, NY/Edgemont) led the team with 12 tackles, including eight solo stops and three sacks-for-loss of 17 yards, while linebacker Andy Rehring (Sr., State College, PA/State College) notched eight tackles and free safety Justin Koch (Jr., Sckuylkill Haven, PA/Sckuylkill Haven) added seven solo stops.
Franklin & Marshall (1-5, 0-2 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on October 25 at home on Williamson Field versus Dickinson College during Alumni Weekend. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
