"Five Points" was originally the intersection formed by Anthony, Little, Water, Orange, & Mulberry which debouched into a triangular square about an acre in size.  In the center was a small park called Paradise Square, which was later surrounded by a paling fence. Eventually the fence became a community clothesline, and was generally disfigured by garments hung upon the palings to dry, while small boys armed with brickbats and staves stood guard. 5

Anthony Street was extended to Chatham Square and became the present Worth Street, Orange became Baxter, and Cross bloomed anew as Park Street. Little Water street vanished altogether, and Paradise Square became the southwest corner of Mulberry Park, which became known as Columbus Park sine 1911.

Five Points points is now known as the intersection of Baxter, Worth and Park Streets.

Some dives on the Bowery had no glasses or mugs. The liquor stood in barrels behind the bar and was served at the end of a long rubber hose. for 3cents a customer could drink as much as he could in one breath. as soon as he paused to take a second breath the bartender cut off the supply.
