(3/25/06 - Hempstead) Senior Chris Unterstein tallied four goals and two assists and junior Athan Iannucci added four goals to lead fifth-ranked Hofstra to a 13-5 victory over 11th-ranked Notre Dame before 4,363 fans at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Pride, who posted its fifth consecutive victory, improve to 5-1 on the season while the Fighting Irish had its three-game winning streak snapped and are now 4-2 in 2006.

The Pride broke the game open in the third quarter scoring six unanswered goals to turn a 4-4 game into a rout. Iannucci and freshman Tom Dooley each tallied two goals in the 6-0 spurt.

Hofstra, which never trailed in the contest though there were two tied scores, jumped out to a 3-0 first quarter lead. Senior middie Ryan Lucas opened the scoring with his second goal of the season at the 4:55 mark. Iannucci would score the next two goals for the Pride with a little help from the Unterstein brothers as sophomore Mike Unterstein assisted on Iannucci's first goals on the day and his 15th of the season at the 9:59 mark, and big brother Chris assisted on the second 1:09 later.

But Notre Dame came roaring back behind senior Matt Karweck, who tallied his seventh goal of the year, off a pass from freshman Peter Christman, with 1:09 to play in the first and added his second, on the man-up with 30 seconds to play in the quarter, off a pass from Pat Walsh. Senior attackman Brian Hubschmann tied the game at 3-3 with a bullet from 10 yards out at the 6:38 mark of the second quarter, off a pass from Matt Ryan. But Chris Unterstein sent Hofstra into the locker room at halftime with a 4-3 lead with his sixth goal of the season, beating Irish goalie Joey Kemp after coming around the right side of the cage.

Hubschmann tied the game at 4-4 for Notre Dame just 39 seconds into the third quarter as he beat Pride goalie Matt Southard after coming around the cage. But that was all the Irish were to get in the third as Dooley started the Hofstra run with his eighth goal of the year, from five yards out after a pass from Chris Unterstein, at the 10:23 mark. Iannucci tallied his third of the game, from Mike Unterstein, 46 seconds later for a 6-4 lead. Senior John Keysor scored the first of his two goals on the day with 6:41 to play in the third, Chris Unterstein notched his second of the game and seventh of the year with 3:14 to play and Dooley posted his second of the game and ninth of the year with 1:51 remaining in the third. Iannucci added the exclamation point to the third period with his fourth of the game and 18th of the season, off a pass from Ryan Lucas, with 12 seconds to play in the quarter to boost the lead to 10-4. The Pride outshot the Irish 13-4 in the third quarter.

Hubschmann scored for the Irish 12 seconds into the fourth quarter, his third of the game and 13th of the year, to close the gap to 10-5. But Chris Unterstein scored twice more-his eighth and ninth-around a John Keysor goal-his eighth-in the final seven minutes to close out the scoring.

Hofstra, which recorded its fifth straight game of holding its opponent to six goals or less this year, outshot the Irish 41-24 and won 16 of 22 face-offs. The Pride picked up 42 ground balls to Notre Dame's 28. Hofstra senior goalie Matt Southard recorded six saves in the Pride cage while Kemp posted 11 saves for the Irish.

The Pride return to action on Tuesday night when they host the Black Knights of Army at Shuart Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Hofstra is 13-36 all-time against Army and will be looking to avenge a 11-10 loss at then-fifth ranked Army last March. Notre Dame will host Brown on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
