Hofstra defeats Harvard 13-6

(Uniondale, NY 4/29/06) - Senior Chris Unterstein tallied three goals and two assists, while freshman Tom Dooley scored three goals to lead the second ranked Pride of Hofstra (14-1) to a 13-6 victory over #16 Harvard (6-5) at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday evening.

Hofstra broke the school record with its 14th straight victory and tied the school record with the 14^th win of the season. Unterstein recorded his 150th career point in the contest while Dooley broke the school's freshman points record, posting three points in the contest, to give him 32 goals and 13 assists for 45 points, topping Andy Carlson's 1991 mark of 44 points (35-9).

The Pride scored the first three goals of the game in the first 4:07 and were never threatened in the contest. Senior Tim Treubig opened the scoring 2:17 into the contest with a bullet from 10 yards out. It was his 12^th goal of the year. Almost a minute later, sophomore Mike Unterstein picked up a ground ball to left of Harvard goalie Evan O'Donnell and beat the Crimson netminder for his sixth goal of the year. Senior middie John Keysor kept up the torrid pace 55 seconds later, taking a cross-field pass from Athan Iannucci and firing an 18-yard blur past O'Donnell for a 3-0 lead.

The Crimson got on the board with 5:03 to play in the quarter as Evan Calvert tallied his 22nd goal of the year from Greg Cohen to cut the deficit to 3-1. But Hofstra went on another three goal run, including two before the periods end, to boost the lead to 6-1 early in the second quarter. Chris Unterstein scored the first of his three goals on the night, his 33rd of the year, 17 seconds after Harvard got on the scoreboard. Freshman sensation Dooley scored his 30th goal of the year, off a pass from Mike Unterstein, with 1:59 to play in the first for a 5-1 lead. Senior middie Rob Bonaguro, who has been sidelined with a hand injury since March 29, made his return a happy one Saturday by scoring the Pride's sixth goal 1:46 into the second quarter.

Harvard's Greg Cohen scored his 18th goal of the year with 10:22 to play in the half. But Hofstra responded with two straight goals by Chris Unterstein and Iannucci to take an 8-2 lead. After Greg Cohen scored again with 3:19 remaining, Iannucci (man-up) and Dooley closed out the second quarter with goals to give the Pride a 10-3 lead at halftime.

The Crimson's Brooks Scholl scored 6:09 into the third, but Chris Unterstein completed his hat trick with 1:26 left in the third and Bill Peters scored from Chris Unterstein with five seconds left for a 12-4 lead after three quarters. After Dooley scored the first goal of the fourth, Calvert and Steve Cohen closed out the scoring with goals for Harvard.

Greg Gohen and Calvert led the Crimson with two goals apiece, while Greg Cohen also added an assist.

Matt Southard made nine saves in 55:53, while Pat DeBolt had two saves in relief. O'Donnell, who played the first 30 minutes, made nine saves for the Crimson. Joe Pike made eight saves for Harvard in the second half.

The Pride return to action Wednesday night when they host a Colonial Athletic Association semifinal contest against Villanova at James M. Shuart Stadium. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
