Virginia Bounces Back, Defeats Stony Brook 15-7

(Stony Brook, NY - 2/24/07) - The Virginia Cavaliers tallied nine unanswered
goals spanning the second and fourth quarters en route to topping the Stony
Brook University men's lacrosse team, 15-7, in front of 2,262 at Kenneth P.
LaValle Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Seawolves fall to
0-1 on the season while Virginia improves to 1-1.
"What a great opportunity it was to open the season against Virginia, the
defending national champions," said head coach Rick Sowell. " I thought we did
some good things this afternoon, but we certainly have some things to work on
heading into Harvard next week."
After a Bobby Trenkle goal in transition off a feed from Bo Tripodi cut the
Cavaliers lead to 6-5 with 9:47 left in the first half, the Cavaliers defense
thwarted the Seawolves offense, holding the home squad without a goal for the
next 39:56. In that stretch, UVA netted nine unanswered goals, which proved to
be the difference in the contest.
SB jumped on the board first when Rhys Duch barreled his way through the
Cavalier defense to put the Seawolves up 1-0 at the 12:44 mark of the first
period. UVA responded with the next two tallies and Danny Gladding and Brian
Carroll each netted unassisted goals. Tripodi evened the contest at two apiece
after Trenkle found the junior attack man in front of the cage with 8:42 left
in the first stanza. Virginia would then rattle off the next three goals, two
from Jack Riley, to give the visitors a 5-2 advantage after one quarter of
play.

The two teams traded goals at the start of the second as Tripodi and Steve
Giannone each found the back of the cage for their teams before Duch found
Ryan Hughes for a man-up goals with 10:13 left in the half. Trenkle's
transition goal just 26 seconds later would be the Seawolves last goal for the
next 39-plus minutes.
Virginia outscored Stony Brook the rest of the way, 9-2, and out shot the
Seawolves 24-11 in the second half. The Seawolves were daunted by turnovers in
the third period, making eight miscues and taking just a pair of shots.
Brendan Callahan was outstanding in goal throughout the game for SB as he made
19 saves. Tripodi finished the game with three goals and an assist while
Trenkle added a goal and three assists Gladding led the way for UVA with four
goals and two assists while Riley also added four goals. Kip Turner turned
away eight shots for the Cavaliers in net.
The Seawolves return to action when they host Harvard on Saturday, March 3.
Face-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.

the Cavaliers' first win this season. The game was played in front of a crowd
of 2,262 at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Long Island. The Cavaliers improved
to 1-1. It was Stony Brook's first match of the season.
"It was a really nice win on the road for us," said UVa coach Dom Starsia. "It
was a really hard week, but I thought we tightened up our performance,
especially in the second half."
After Stony Brook opened the scoring at the 12:44 mark of the first quarter on
an unassisted goal by Rhys Duch, the Cavaliers proceeded to build a 5-2 lead
by the end of the opening period, including a pair of goals by Jack Riley.

Danny Gladding, who recorded UVa's first goal of the day, netted three
consecutive unassisted scores to ignite UVa's scoring rush. He recorded goals
at 9:08 of the second period, 8:12 of the third quarter and then 2:24 of the
same period to improve UVa's lead to 9-5. Riley added a pair of fourth quarter
tallies to also finish with four goals for the Cavaliers. That was a
single-game scoring best for the UVa junior.
Virginia out shot the Seawolves 24-11 in the second half. The Seawolves were
daunted by turnovers in the third period, making eight miscues and taking just
a pair of shots.
Brendan Callahan had 19 saves in goal for Stony Brook while UVa's Kip Turner
turned away eight shots from the Cavalier net, including five in the second
quarter while the contest was still a close affair.
The Cavaliers return to action March 3 vs. Syracuse at the 2007 Inside
Lacrosse Face-Off Classic at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium. Game time is 2:30
p.m.
