#2 Gettysburg Defeats F&M to Finish Regular Season
GAME PHOTOS
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman attackman Joe Brody (Bethesda, Md./Walter
Johnson) scored four goals for the third straight game, and junior
attackman Trip Dyer (Ocean View, Del./Worcester Prep [Md.]) tied his
career high with six points to lead No. 2 Gettysburg to a 14-5 win against
Franklin & Marshall in Centennial Conference (CC) action at Shirk Field at
Musselman Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Dyer tallied four goals and a
pair of assists.
Gettysburg (12-2, 7-1 CC) senior goalie Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville,
Md./Loyola Blakefield) made eight saves in the game and improved to 58-12
in his career. His first stop of the game broke a tie with Doug Master for
third place on the Gettysburg career saves list, and his second save moved
him into fourth place on the CC career chart. He now needs just 13 saves
to become the second-leading stopper in Bullet history. He also had three
ground balls and two caused turnovers on the day.
Franklin & Marshall (6-7, 3-5 CC) got two goals each from senior attackman
Cyrus Adams and sophomore attackman Mark Hild. Senior midfielder Kevin
Kohl added a goal and an assist in the final game of his collegiate
career.
The Bullets scored the game's first five goals and led 7-2 at the half.
Senior midfielder Andrew Mavraganis (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) opened the
scoring just 45 seconds into the game. He got the ball about 10 yards out
directly in front of the crease, rolled to his right and fired a shot just
inside the far post.
Senior midfielder Tom O'Donnell (Lansdale, Pa./La Salle College) tallied
the next strike, after running about as far as one player can to score a
goal. He hauled in a pass on the left sideline, 10 yards short of
midfield. He brought it over the center line to complete the clear and cut
diagonally across the field until his was about 15 yards out, flattened
his approach and went past the crease to the right before circling back to
nailing a point-blank goal. Brody then converted a feed from Dyer in
transition at the 2:07 mark of the first quarter.
Dyer scored two unassisted markers in a little more than three minutes
midway through the second. Hild broke up the 5-0 Bullet run with 6:41
remaining in the first half, though. He had the ball behind the cage and
rolled out around the left post with two Bullet defenders in tow and got
off a shot to beat Vaughan.
Just under two minutes later, junior midfielder Ben Sufrin (Mahopac,
N.Y./Mahopac) scored the game winner with an assist going to Mavraganis.
Brody would score again in the first half before the Diplomats scored
twice spanning the halves to cut the deficit to 7-3. Gettysburg erupted
for the next five goals to put the game away.
The Bullets dominated possession in the first half, in large part due to
senior midfielder Jimmy Gates (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) who was 7-for-11
on faceoffs before halftime. He finished the day 15-of-22 with 11 ground
balls.
Gettysburg will return to action on Friday in the semifinals of the 2007
Centennial Conference Men's Lacrosse Championships. For the fifth time in
the seven-year history of the conference tournament, the Bullets are the
top seed and will take on fourth-seeded Haverford in one semifinal. No. 18
Dickinson, the second seed, will play No. 17 Washington (Md.) in the other
semifinal with the winners to square off in Sunday's championship game.
