FDR to End "Mystery Cruise" This Week Washington, D.C., August 13 (U.P.) [as published in NEWSDAY Aug. 13, 1941 ] -- President Roosevelt is expected to land somewhere on the northeast coast in a day or two and then he may dispel the great mystery surrounding his vacation cruise - whether he he had conferred with British Prime Minister Churchill. Since he embarked on his cruise in the North Atlantic Aug. 3, only cryptic messages have come from the yacht Potomac, and there have not been any of those since Saturday. Washington, London and other capitals meanwhile have boiled with rumors that Churchill and Roosevelt were meeting at sea or at some isolated North Atlantic point. When and where the President will disembark - like everything else about the cruise - was a mystery. But on the basis of plans announced at the outset of the cruise, he is due to come ashore very soon now. E-mail: Robert Swanson |
