1 January 1944 to 23 January 1944: Resting on keel blocks in drydock #4, Annex #1, South Boston Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts. At 1300, 6 January 1944, Captain TULLY SHELLEY, USN, relinquished command of this vessel and was detached in accordance with orders of the Chief of Naval Personnel. Commander A.G. GADEN, U.S. Navy, Communications Officer, assumed command. On 15 January 1944, Commander J.L. PHARES, USN, Executive Officer, returned aboard from leave and assumed command. At 1130 21 January 1944, Captain E.H. JONES, USN, assumed command of this vessel in accordance with Bureau of Personnel dispatch 010635 of January 1944.

23 January 1944: At 1235 underway from drydock #4 and moored port side to, Pier #6, Annex#1, South Boston Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts. 

23 January 1944 to 28 January 1944: Moored port side to Pier #6, Annex #1, South Boston Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts.

28 January 1944: At 1402 underway from Pier #6, Annex #1, South Boston Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts, to run the degaussing range in President Roads, Boston, Massachusetts. At 1516 moored starboard side to, Pier #1, South Boston Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts. 

29 January 1944: At 0803 underway from Pier #6, South Boston Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts enroute to Casco Bay, Portland, Maine in accordance with Commader Task Force TWENTY TWO, Administrative Offices despatch 262041. At 1634 anchored in Casco Bay, Portland, Maine.

Conducted underway exercises including mooring to buoy and docking. 1555 Commander Task Force 22 left ship and lowered his personal flag.

4 March 1944 to 26 March 1944: Operating out of CascoBay, Portland, Maine as a detached group of Task Force 22. Ship engaged in post-over-haul training program under orders of the Senior Officer Present Afloat, Casco Bay, Portland, Maine. The following exercises were carried out.

Steaming as flagship of Rear Admiral DAVIDSON, Commander Task Force EIGHTY-SIX and carrying in Brigadier General B.W. CHIDLAW, U.S. Army, of the XII Tactical Air Force and his staff, enroute to Propiano, Corsica.

13 August 1944: Steaming as before. At 1119 anchored in Golfe de Valinco, Propiano, Corsica.

14 August 1944: Anchored as before. At 1030 underway from Propiano, Corsica enroute to assault area off Ile du Levant, Southern France. USS Augusta steaming as guide of Sitka Assault Group, consisting of USS SOMERS, GLEAVES, OSMOND, INGRAM, GREENE, TATTNALL, BARRY, ROPER, H.M.S. DIDO, PRINCE HENRY, PRINCE DAVID, PRINCE ALBERT, PRINCE BAUDOWIN, PRINCESS BEATRIX, and fifteen (15) PT boats. At 2155 arrived in the Assault Area. Left formation and commenced steaming on various courses at various speeds to remain in Fire Support Area THREE of Sitka Assault Area.

15 August 1944: Steaming as before. At 0450 and again at 0530 gunfire was observed on the port quarter and shortly later two (2) burning ships were sighted. Both were identified as targets of the USS SOMERS. At 0910 commenced firing main battery shore bombardment on target on Port Cros Island. At 0918 ceased firing - nine (9) rounds of H.C. expended. At 1126 commenced firing main battery shore bombardment on target on Cape Negre. At 1131 ceased firing - six (6) rounds of H.C. expended. At 1205 unloaded Turret I on Porquerolles Island. At. 1542 commenced firing main battery shore bombardment on target on Port Cros Island. At 1627 ceased firing - ninety-two (92) rounds of H.C. expended. At 2023 the Secretary Navy, J.M. FORRESTALL, came aboard from USS PLUNKETT for an official visit with Rear Admiral Davidson.

17 August 1944: Steaming as before. At 1111 commenced firing main battery shore bombardment on Port Cros Island. At 1210 ceased firing - one hundred thirty eight (138) rounds of H.C. expended. At 1315 the fort on Port Cros Island, which had been the main battery target, surrendered.

At 1315 commenced maneuvering to render fire support in ALPHA Area. At 1549 commenced firing main battery shore bombardment on target on Porquerolles Island. At 1610 ceased firing - thirty-nine (39) rounds of H.C. expended. At 1905 set course for DELTA Area to close to the U.S.S. CATOCTIN. At 2107 set course for Sitka Assault Area. At 2305 commenced maneuvering to remain in the Sitka Assault Area.

19 August 1944: Steaming as before. At 1428 set course for Toulon to bombard the harbor and coastal defenses. U.S.S. AUGUSTA GUIDE, followed in column by the U.S.S. NEVADA and F.S. LORRAINE and screened by the U.S.S. EBERLE, ERICSSON, GLEAVES and KEARNEY. At 1608 commenced firing - twenty-seven (27) rounds of H.C. expended.
