For his trip to the Big Three meeting at Potsdam with Churchill and Stalin, President Truman chose an "'old salt" of many historic occasions, the USS Augusta.

On July 7, 1945 President Truman stepped off a special train onto pier 6 at Newport News, Virginia, and was piped aboard the Augusta enroute to the Potsdam Conference. Secretary of State James F. Byrnes, and Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy accompanied Truman. Following breakfast in the mess (see photo at right) Truman proceeded to the flag bridge. At 6:55AM Truman ordered the Augusta to get under way, and the ship set out for the Atlantic under a clear sky, on a smooth sea, with a balmy 79 degree 23 knot breeze... destination Antwerp, Belgium. Met by a British escort, Augusta arrived on 14 July, and received dignitaries, including General Eisenhower. Her guests departed the same day and Augusta got underway to proceed to Plymouth, arriving there on 28 July.

At the conclusion of the journey it is said that the Augusta's crew rated their Commander-in-chief a "Four-Oh" sailor.

PRESIDENT TRUMAN ANNOUNCES A-BOMB ATTACK ON HIROSHIMA

Letters of appreciation from President Harry Truman regarding his voyages on the Augusta

On 7 August, following the Potsdam Conference, President Truman boarded the USS Augusta for the return voyage to Newport News, Virginia. While onboard Captain Frank Graham, an officer in the Augusta's map room handed Truman the following message:

HIROSHIMA BOMBED VISUALLY WITH ONE TENTH [CLOUD] COVER AT 052315A [AUGUST 5, 7:15 P.M., WASHINGTON TIME]. THERE WAS NO FIGHTER OPPOSITION AND NO FLAK. PARSON REPORTS 15 MINUTES AFTER BOMB AS FOLLOWS: 'RESULTS CLEAR-CUT SUCCESSFUL IN ALL RESPECTS. VISIBLE EFFECTS GREATER THAN IN ANY TEST. CONDITION NORMAL IN AIRPLANE FOLLOWING DELIVERY.'

Truman turned, shook Graham's hand and exclaimed to his staff "this is the greatest thing in history!". Truman then announced the news to the crew of the Augusta. John Vallone (QM 3/c N Division) was present at that time and e-mails us the following account:

President Truman was having mess with the crew in the forward mess hall when he announced to us "the United States has just dropped an atomic bomb on Japan having a force equal to 20,000 times stronger than TNT explosive". I was astonished by his statement and I joined in with applause with the rest of the crew...after all Japan was the bad guy and our enemy....
